A bit of history about Isla Saona

Did you know that Isla Saona was actually inhabited by the Taino Indians and was called Adamanay. When Christopher Columbus set foot on the island he named it Saona to honor his friend Michele da Cuneo from Savonna. During the Spanish conquest, the Taino population thinned out, because of diseases and poor work conditions. The island was left deserted until the 1940’s when President Trujillo ordered 20 families of the town la Romana to live there. Want to know the reason why? The day will start when your air-conditioned transport picks you up at the place you are staying at in Punta Cana. From there on the transport will take you to Bayahibe -a fishing town- where you will be boarding a speedboat that will take you to the island.

First stop will be snorkeling above a shipwreck in the ocean, where you will get the first feeling of the beautiful ocean.

After that you will arrive at a remote beach that you only see on those travel programs where they show the most beautiful beaches in the world. Relax, swim and sunbathe there! The beach even has a secret lagoon, where at certain times of the year flamingos can be seen.

From there on you visit the fishing village, Mano Juan, where you find out more of the culture of the island and eco life since you will be visiting the turtle sanctuary too. At certain times of the year, you will see the baby turtles as they hatch out of their eggs.

Indulge in a typical Dominican lunch buffet at the beach and marvel at the beautiful surroundings.

But it does not stop there. You get to visit another secluded beach, called Doctor’s beach with a very special history behind it. At that beach the birds will be your background music. Back on the speedboat, you will be seeing mangroves and beautiful big starfishes in the Natural Pool!
